For centuries, dunnage and industrial storage and packaging came in two materials: wood for pallets and crates, largely used once and discarded; and steel for longer-lasting racks, baskets and bins.

The raw materials for building them have become more and more expensive. Making them is labor-intensive. And they’re heavy — an even more important consideration as the cost of fuel has skyrocketed.

Back in the 1950s, Fred Robinson pioneered lighter, more durable and reusable pallets and storage — thermoforming them out of newly developed plastics. Today, businesses that ship and store high volumes of products and components are more likely to do it with environmentally friendly and economical pallets and containers made of polyethylene and polypropylene — for many reasons.
